A game round dated tomorrow: convert UTC before comparing records

The same instant can have different calendar dates in UTC and Philippine Standard Time. A round shown at 18:30 UTC on 8 October corresponds to 02:30 on 9 October in the Philippines.

For the topic overview, see Learn the details before the spin.

A one-day difference around midnight is therefore not enough to prove that two records belong to different rounds. First identify the time zone attached to each timestamp.

Keep the offset with the time

The UNFCCC’s Philippines information note identifies Philippine Standard Time as UTC+8. Applying that offset to a timestamp means adding eight hours, carrying into the next date when needed. The calculation does not identify the time zone used by a particular operator.

Do not guess from the label “server time” or the language of a page. An export can use UTC while a browser displays local time. If the offset is absent, keep it unresolved until the source defines it.

Three conversions across the date boundary

The last row is the same instant written two ways. Adding eight to the hour but keeping 8 October would produce an invalid “26:30” clock time. Normalize both the clock and calendar date. When converting back, subtract eight hours and adjust the date in the opposite direction if necessary.

Match identifiers before declaring a duplicate

A matching converted time is useful evidence, but not a unique identifier. Several events can occur in the same minute. Pair the normalized timestamp with the round reference, title, currency, transaction type and amount.

Conversely, an award posting time can differ from the time the round began. That delay is a different issue from a time-zone offset. Preserve both event meanings rather than forcing them into one timestamp.

Define the day before making a daily total

A “9 October” filter in UTC covers a different interval from 9 October in the Philippines. To compare daily exports, first choose one reporting time zone and convert the boundaries consistently. Otherwise late-evening UTC events may disappear from one daily total and appear in the next.

Keep the original timestamp in a separate column and add a normalized value, so the transformation is reversible. This worksheet explains date alignment; it does not establish whether a missing entry was settled or whether an account balance is correct.
